The directive was simple: tear down the old porch and stairs and build an outdoor mudroom, a bench, maybe a place to put your shoes, recover as much useable space as possible in the process. It wasn't until we were standing there looking at the thing, thinking of how our kids would use it and climb on it that we thought to ourselves, "Oh, it's a treehouse."
