The aim was to open up the first floor of one of those 19th century Alameda houses and connect it to the backyard. Sometimes the vision is already well defined, and by the time I show up, the job is to just facilitate and enable. How else to end up with spaces that don’t feel designed so much as lived in? How else to welcome surprise if not by getting out of the way?
