Super Bloom

The brief asked for a hypothetical memorial to the last nuclear bomb, the site to be chosen from a list of former nuclear test sites. I didn’t know they used to test bombs near the rolling hills on the 580 where there are all those windmills. I started with a nuclear blast radius and overlaid--to scale--its concentric reach, the devastation increasing as you move towards the center. Rather than memorialize destruction, however, I thought to plant and maintain a field of California poppies among the windmills and billowing landscape. On the occasion of there being such a thing as a last nuclear bomb, I imagine only simple joy, something maybe even pretty, somewhere you might want to take a selfie.
